Shuffling is any process by which you change the order of the cards.
In order to acquaint you with what I consider to be the various methods of shuffling, I should perhaps offer some insight into my own evolution in the field of shuffling, that is to say the development of my understanding and ideas. In spite of all the material I will describe in this volume, I have never formally learned to shuffle, or stack or deal, at least not until I after my own ideas were developed, which is perhaps why I feel qualified to share my thoughts now. In all likelihood, there will be a litany of protests that one so unschooled in the art of card manipulation would attempt to compose a work on the subjects I will indulge, but as Caesar said so long ago, "the die is cast" and so we will accept the outcome.
