To Perform

Remove the card case from your pocket, holding it with the right thumb on the bottom of the box and the balance of the right fingers across the top. Allow the audience to see the front (?) of the card case. Don't make a big deal out of this, simply allow the image to burn its way into their minds. As I show the case, my patter goes like this: "Recently a pit boss in Las Vegas told me there are three reasons some gamblers consistently win. One, they're very lucky. Two, they're extremely skilled. Or three, they CHEAT! As a professional mentalist, I'd like to offer you a fourth alternative, intuition. In fact, earlier today, my intuition told me to write the name of a particular playing card on this small piece of cardboard."

As you say this, turn the card case over, displaying the small card under the rubber band. Holding the small prediction card in place with the left thumb, remove the rubber band with the right hand, sliding it off the bottom of the card case. The left fingers keep the gaff and extra cards aligned with the card box.

Show the back of the small prediction card and place it face down on the table. Continuing to hold the gaff and extra cards in place with the left fingers, open the card case with your right hand and tip out the cards into the waiting right hand. Give the cards to the spectator and ask that the pack be examined and shuffled to his or her heart's content.

"While he's doing that, I'll place my intuition card inside the box for safekeeping," you state. Place the mini-card inside the case and close the lid without allowing the spectators to see what is written upon it. Grasp the card box between the right thumb on the bottom and the right fingers across the top. Holding the box with the front panel facing the audience, shake the box up and down allowing the small card inside to be heard knocking about.

Instruct the spectator to cut the pack into four face down piles on the table and to point to any one of the four piles. When he does so, place the card box, front panel side down, on top of the chosen pile to mark same. This automatically places the "box/back" gaffed card fourth from the top of the chosen pile. The top card of this pile will now match the prediction card.

Have the spectator turn the top cards of the remaining three piles face up and ask if he notices anything unusual about them. Despite his reply, you state, "They're all different!" Ask the spectator if he has any idea as to the identity of the top card of his freely chosen pile. Naturally, he doesn't. Have the spectator pick up the card box and turn over the top card of his selected pile so it can be shown to the rest of the audience. As he's doing this, turn over the next card and note that if the spectator had cut one card deeper, then this card would have been the chosen card. Have the spectator open the card box and remove the prediction card which matches the spectator's freely (?) selected card. Gather up all the cards and place them in the card case. Drop same in your pocket and take a bow. You have just accomplished a miracle.

The Art Of Cold Reading

The Art Of Cold Reading

Today I'm going to teach you a fundamental Mentalism technique known as 'cold reading'. Cold reading is a technique employed by mentalists and charlatans and by charlatan I refer to psychics, mediums, fortune tellers or anyone that claims false abilities that is used to give the illusion that the person has some form of super natural power.
