The gimmick employed is one that every mentalist truly appreciates. A gimmick that can remain in full view and never be suspected as being anything more than what it is - an unprepared common object found in every desk drawer; a paper clip. The ones that I use were obtained from a quality leather goods store. The clips are steel, but brass plated. In addition, you'll need a magnetic half-dollar, available at most magic shops, plus two unprepared half-dollars. Also required are three small manila pay envelopes, a pen, a leather spring-top coin purse and a prediction slip approximately 3-inches square containing the following message: "The only coin and envelope that will match are both dated 1971." Naturally, the date in the prediction should match the date on your magnetic half-dollar.

Today I'm going to teach you a fundamental Mentalism technique known as 'cold reading'. Cold reading is a technique employed by mentalists and charlatans and by charlatan I refer to psychics, mediums, fortune tellers or anyone that claims false abilities that is used to give the illusion that the person has some form of super natural power.
