A: Open strong, establishing yourself and your personality, and close stronger than you began.
One of my favorite openers, "Descripto," is described in "The Becker Coin Purse Mysteries." Believe me, when the audience realizes that the person being described in your prediction is the one selected by the on stage volunteer, the applause is strong and sustained.
As for a closing effect, I've never found any effect to be more powerful or controversial than the "Russian Roulette" routine. Another alternative would be a strong prediction effect. Something bordering on the Dunninger Brain Buster extravaganzas of radio and early TV.
Most of today's successful professionals stick pretty much with the classics such as Q & A, the blindfold, psychometry and book tests.
In early May 1992, I received a fax from my good friend in Berlin, professional magician/mentalist, Ted Lesley. Stating that he planned to market an effect created by a well known German mentalist, Ted asked for my input. Since I had previously helped Ted "Americanize" the instructions for a card effect by the same individual, I was more than happy to give further assistance.
Imagine my surprise after reading the instructions, when I discovered that one of the most popular items I had created in the last few years had been appropriated by Ted's acquaintance, without a single credit to yours truly. I was looking at an inferior adaptation of my own effect, "Cardology" and its predecessor "Mind Mirror."
I immediately faxed Ted an inquiry and was informed that the individual, after seeing me perform the "Cardology" effect in Berlin during my 1989 European lecture tour, claimed that he had been using my brainchild for eight years before he saw me do it. Frankly, these things have not really upset me that much in the past but apparently the fuse has shortened in recent years.
It seems that all too often, after seeing someone do something that appeals to them, some magicians will claim parentage on the dubious claim they've been doing the effect for eight, ten, twenty or more years before seeing the effect performed by the rightful originator. Naturally, similar ideas can be conceived independently by two or more people. However, unless there's precedence established in print or by an eyewitness, chances are the idea's been lifted.
I originated the "Mind Mirror" and "Cardology" effects to eliminate some of the shortcomings inherent in most presentations of the clock effect. I eliminated the need to deal the cards in a circle on a table, thereby transforming it into a stand-up effect. My routines also enabled the performer to have the deck shuffled by the spectator prior to selecting both the hour (or month) and card. In addition, I not only used the clock principle to determine a time and card being thought of by the spectator, my variation enabled me to present the effect as a prediction. "Cardology" and its predecessor, "Mind Mirror" have long been an integral and popular part of my lectures in the United States as well as Europe and the Orient.
The "new" effect Ted wanted to market actually ignored many of the advantages afforded by my routines and returned the effect to a close-up table presentation. What was new, at least in the context of this effect, was the use of an engraved wristwatch to reveal the predicted card and the "Hour of Destiny" selected by the spectator. Unfortunately, the "new" effect called for the performer to turn his back as the spectator picks up and pockets the circle of cards on the table in order to secretly (?) set the watch to the selected hour. In my estimation, there was no logical reason for the performer to turn his back at that time.
At any rate, I told Ted that I would reflect on the matter and get back to him. It didn't take very long for me to realize that the watch should be a "Hunting Case" pocket watch instead of a wristwatch. The back of the pocket watch could still be engraved, but the door covering the face of the watch would permit use of the miscall subtlety I used so effectively in "Cardology."
By the time I had finished my adaptation of "The Hour of Destiny," it was one of the most effective stand-up mental effects imaginable. I sent the new routines and handling to Ted and gave him permission to market it under my name. The use of an engraved wristwatch (which I changed to a pocket watch) and the title "Hour of Destiny" should be credited to Mr. Carlhorst Meier of Germany. The variations to the clock principle, the routining, the patter premise and the use of a "Hunting Case" style pocket watch are all mine. So much for the trivia. Here's an effect that I know you'll be thrilled to perform.
