For Stage

I think you'll agree that "Mind Probe" is a simple, direct and powerful bit of mentalism. It makes the ideal opener since it plays so fast. Now as promised earlier, I'll describe the way I do "Mind Probe" in my stage performances.

To begin, I accumulated over several months, five bills that meet the necessary criteria of three digits per serial number with one important difference. They all shared one digit in common. In other words, each of the five bills had an "8" in its serial number. Naturally, it took patience and constant scrutiny to gather these five gems together, but it was worth it. Each of the five bills was prepared in the manner described. Naturally, the beauty of it all was the fact that the written prediction on the pad fits all five bills enabling you to offer the spectator a free choice of any one of the five bills. I also point out near the conclusion that the spectator not only had a free choice of bill, but also a free choice of any digit out of 40 possibilities! (5 bills x 8 digits ea.). It's this expansion of possibilities that adds to the climax.

Incidentally, just prior to my European Lecture Tour in 1989, it dawned on me that I could double the number of bills in use by alternating ordinary unprepared bills between the special bills. In that way, I could simply duck bills one at a time from the top of the stack to the bottom until a spectator calls "stop." Then, noting whether the "special" bill is on the top or bottom, I remove it and proceed as originally outlined above. This leaves an unprepared bill on the top or bottom of the packet to casually show later as being "unprepared."

An excellent adjunct to this effect appeared in Bascom Jones' "Magick", issue #436, entitled "Nines" by New Jersey mentalist, Michael Millet. All you would have to do to tie the two effects together is to ensure that the serial numbers on each of the alternating, unprepared bills, when added together, produce a sum that ends in a nine. This would enable you to determine which of eight digits the spectator is thinking of, by using the principle known as "casting out nines." Look it up and start checking the serial numbers on every bill that comes into your possession.

O'Thoughts

I have included two presentations. Both are extrememly entertaining and the methodology is a vast improvement on the ancient principle employed.

The Art Of Cold Reading

The Art Of Cold Reading

Today I'm going to teach you a fundamental Mentalism technique known as 'cold reading'. Cold reading is a technique employed by mentalists and charlatans and by charlatan I refer to psychics, mediums, fortune tellers or anyone that claims false abilities that is used to give the illusion that the person has some form of super natural power.
