Addendum

I learned many years ago that constant scrutiny of toy stores will often unearth items with magical potential. In fact, I recall, Colonel Franklin Davis, a member of Ring 50 in Washington, DC, lecturing on the subject and demonstrating one of his "finds." Colonel Davis had purchased a toy which fired a projectile in the air. As it floated to earth on a miniature parachute, a selected playing card was seen dangling beneath it. Most certainly, the toy had provided an unusual means of revealing a chosen card. That was approximately forty years ago. I still remember it vividly.

The elation that I have felt on such occasions was experienced recently. I was browsing through the F.A.O. Schwarz toy store in Scottsdale, AZ, when I spotted a stack of "Spy-Tech" kits for children. Each kit was comprised of some surprisingly sophisticated items for playing "Spies." One kit in particular attracted my attention. As the printing on the box described the contents, "A real working Invisible Detection Kit with spy accessories."

Included in the kit was an Invisible Ultraviolet Ink Pen, a compact Ultraviolet Light and several other related items, packed in a high impact Plastic Carrying Case. It cost $28.

Naturally, it doesn't take too much imagination to figure out what I'm going to use the kit for. It's perfect for the "Transparen-See" effects that I've explained. The kit is manufactured by Tyco Industries, Inc., Moorestown, NJ 08057. The Tyco customer service address is listed as 540 Glen Avenue, Moorestown, NJ 08057. Contact F.A.O. Schwarz Toy Store, 5th Avenue, NY or write to Tyco direct to find out which store in your area is selling the item.

I discovered an Invisible Ink marker set under the trade name, ALEX. The distributor is listed in Englewood, NJ 07631. The kit consists of one invisible ink marker and a developer pen. See if you can track this set down. It's ideal for "Transparen-See" and other effects dependent on the same principle.

An assistant, if one is required, should be as inconspicuous as possible, unless you're actually looking for misdirection.

Another issue is the willingness of your assistant to become involved. Too often we coax, cajole and otherwise browbeat our significant others when there is little desire on their part to be in "show biz."

The Art Of Cold Reading

Today I'm going to teach you a fundamental Mentalism technique known as 'cold reading'. Cold reading is a technique employed by mentalists and charlatans and by charlatan I refer to psychics, mediums, fortune tellers or anyone that claims false abilities that is used to give the illusion that the person has some form of super natural power.
