Plastics

As soon as you have developed some skill with your woodworking tools you may want to continue your magic prop building with plastic. There are many types'of plastic available to the commercial industry, but the most common type used by the do-it-yourselfer is ACRYLIC. Plexiglass, Lucite and Aerylite are all brand names of acrylic that you will find available to you. Acrylic is great for making magic props because it can be drilled, sawn and shaped to almost any shape desired. Plastic is more expensive than wood in general, but has one great advantage over using wood in some magic props. The Devils Flight

The plank is placed upon the horses so that an improvised table is formed. A lady stands on the plank. She is covered with a cloth that doesn't reach to the stage. A pistol is fired the cloth drops the lady has vanished. This is one of the few illusions that can be worked on any stage without the use of traps and other such necessities that are usually employed to produce a similar effect. Explanation The saw horses are ordinary. The plank is prepared by attaching a cloth of the same color as the background used to its rear edge. A long, thin iron bar, which acts as a weight and also enables the performer to roll up the cloth more easily, is sewn to the bottom of the cloth.

Bevel Base

The following page shows a sketch of the typical Asrah base (cross section) and the angles involved in the base rim. Remember, not only does the top and bottom come off the base rim at an angle, but th'JN also must form an angle joint at each corner. Hence the term compound miter. The bottom sketch shows a top view of your table saw as you run your lumber through. Note that the wood is at an angle and the saw blade is at an angle - compound miter. This is the basic building trick behind a tapered base. &gain, in building your own illusions, it is best to start small. Build a Dove In Balloon tray with a top and bottom bevel. This can be done on your Dremel table saw out of scrap materials You will learn a lot about tapered bases by building them in miniature first, not to mention that your mistakes will be miniaturized as well.

Rocking Horse

For a number of woodworking tools, a hammer, saw, chisel etc, hanging from the ceiling of the cabinet on lengths of string. David asked some more members of the audience to assist. Some went into the cabinet. It had no base but they stamped on the concrete floor of the studio anyway, looking for trapdoors. Another volunteer went around the back, shining a torch through the gaps between the rear slats. When everyone was satisfied that the box was no more than a rough wooden crate, they were asked to stand around it effectively surrounding it.

Dolt Yourself

In this one, first performed forty years ago, David asks for three volunteers from the audience who fancy themselves DIY enthusiasts. Each volunteer is stood behind a workbench, wearing a carpenter's apron they have been given, and await instructions. David hands one man a saw and a long plank of wood. The second man is given a hammer and a bag of six-inch nails along with a thick piece of wood. The third gets an electric drill and another thick chunk of wood. As you can imagine the three men look somewhat surprised by their transformation into amateur craftsmen but the lighthearted tone of the piece is set. Do they understand everything Yes. David is ready to tell the band to play when he suddenly remembers something. He picks up a box from behind one of the workbenches and places it prominently on view. As he turns the box around a red cross comes into view and the audience laughs realising it is a first-aid kit. Just in ease, says David and sets it down near the three hapless...

The nati joint

Here is another old seam that is still popu ar today. It consists of a railroad tic set on a pair of saw horses plus a hammer and some 1 l -inch nails provided by the flattie. The grifter taps the point of die nail into the wood, then hands you the hammer. Your mission should you choose to accept it, is to drive the nail all the way into the wood willi only one blow, l'he flattie does it easily every time. Yon do, too. on the practice tries, but when the money is up and it really counts, it turns out to be impossible. The nail always hends before going in all the way. The nail joint is a very frustrating
