Presentation

As with any effect that involves extensive audience interaction, your presentation will evolve over time. The more you perform it the better it will get. You 11 find that many of your best patter lines will originate as comments from the audience.

To give you an idea of what to aim for, here is my script for Liar s Poker:

John, Fd like you to shuffle the deck. Shuffle as much as you tuant and just put the cards doum whenever you re satisfied they re u>eil mixed.

Not all the methods professionals use to gain an edge in a card game constitute cheating. And not all of them involve sleight of hand. Some are mathematical. Some involve card memory. Some are psychological.

An example of the latter is called reading tells. The classic stor> about tells is the old joke about the guy who taught his dog to J>kzy J>oher. When his friends found out, they said, 'That's incrediblel A dog that can i>lay poker! Amazing?" His owner said, 'It's not that imirressitie. Every tim^ he*s dealt a good hand, he u/ags his tail.7*

That's an example of a tell: some unconscious psychological Hjj-off that can alert a smart opponent that you re holding a good hand or a bad hand, or that you re bluffing. Developing real skill at reading tells can take a lifetime of card playing experience.

J u'ant to try an experiment in reading tells. John shuffled the cards and Vve dealt each of you a poker hand. I want you to J>ick ufi your hand and mix the cards like this. Mix them as much as you want.

In a moment, Tm going to ash each of you to spread your cards and look at your poker hand in such a uja> that no one else can see it When you do, J loant you to think of one card. It can he any card in your hand. But, once you settle on a card, I tvant you to focus entirely on it Ignore all the other cards and just burn that one card into your memory,. Would you do that right twuj?

Mix your cards one more time. As you do, keep concentrating on your card. You might want to repeat its name in your mind over and over or mentally picture it. John, I want you to drop your poker hand on top of the deck. You dro£ yours on top. And yours also. And yours.

Keef) in mind that reading tells is not a sure-fire technique. But if you can gu^ss right more often than you guess wrongyoull get the money.

Frn going to deal another round of poker. Just leave the cards on the table for the time being. I want each of you to look at these cards and see whether the one you Ye thinking of is among them Don't say anything. Just notice whether or not it's there. Did anyone see his card? You saw it No one else?

Smart poker players know that, if they want to determine if someone is bluffing, they should try to engage him in conversation The voice is a great indicator of unconscious stress. Bill, I'm going to show you these cards one at ♦ a time. Each time I will ash 'Ts this your card?" I want you to answer no every time.

[Go through the cards.]

J think I detected a reaction. Bill, what card did you think of?

[Repeat process with remaining poker hands as needed,]

Ever notice how many professional poker flayers wear hats when they £>lay? Same wear cowboy hats; others wear truckers' caj>s or Panama bats. But they always pull the brim down over their eyes. And the ones who don't wear hats wear dark glasses. That s because they know that nothing can give away your thoughts faster than your eyes.

Don, I'm going to watch your eyes. Ill show you these cards one at a time. I won't ask you anything and I don't want you to say anything. But do make sure that you actually look at every card I show you.

[Go through the cards.]

Either you re very good at maintaining a fjoker face or you re on Prozac*

[Mix the cards and then go through the procedure once more.]

I think I've got it. Don, what card did you think of?

This time I'm going to rely solely on body language. Try not to give me any clue, Frank. All that I ask is that you look at the cards as J move them around.

Hrm There's a lot of tension there. But which card is generating it?

Frank, what card did you think of?

Since I ve been so successful so far, I'm going to really challenge myself on your card, John Let s increase the odds. You Ye thinking of one card in forty-nine and you Ye the only person alive urho knows what that card is.

With the odds stacked that strongly against me I'm going to have to rely on verbal, optical, and body language tells. J to going to show you the cards one at a time. 1 want you to look at each card. If the card is the ace of hearts, say, "The ace of hearts is not my card" If it's the two of spades, say, The turo of spades is not my card." Try not to vary your tone or give me any other kind of clue.

No, that s definitely not it.

J don't think so.

I think you tried to fake a reaction to make me think it was the sis: of diamonds, but no.

Definitely not.

You wagged your tail, John. Clearly this is it, the nine of spades.

John* tell everyone what card you thought of.

No, you don't have to lie anymore, John What card did you think of? The six of duzmmitk.

Well> I told you this wasn't a sure-fire technique. But wh&i reading tells lets me dawn, I just fall back on cheating,
