I think that good close-up magic should contain an undercurrent of threat. Most fundamentally, it threatens the viewer's comfortable worldview. The closer to home you can bring that threat the better. This effect does so literally. It invades the spectator's personal space in a non-offensive but unsettling way. The magic happens to the spectator. I've found few effects this short that are this strong.
