Here is a problem that I've been working 011 for several years, a totally impronptu book test that can compare to the David lloy test, which unfortunately has been bandied about and exposed a great deal. This principle is also adaptable to many other effects as you'll see later in this book.
If feet The performer asks for a large piece of blank paper, and a pen ur pencil. Upon receipt of paper, he tears it into three smaller pieces, '•itch as close to the other in appearance as possible, and each about three inches square. These three slips of paper are then handed to a .p.ctator with the instructions that he print a different two digit number in the center of each one of them, after which the pieces of paper .iic to be folded once in each direction. The spectator is also cautioned to fold the slips identically, so as to have no marked differences in appciirance between any of them.
Hie spectator is then asked to mix up the slips, so that neither of the patties in the experiment could possibly know which slip is which, rhc performer now states that since only one of the numbers is needed, the spectator should decide which two of the three slips are to be destroyed. This process is to assure that there is a totally free choice of an unknown number, because if just one number was used, the pei former could be accused of reading the spectator's mind to learn the number, or that he could somehow psychologically influence the spectator's choice. This way, even the spectator who chose the numbers couldn't know what number is on the remaining slip. After the spectator decides which two slips are to be destroyed, the performer tears up one of the slips chosen to be destroyed, as the spectator is directed to tear up the other now unwanted piece of paper.
Anyone present is asked for the loan of a book or magazine. The performer explains when he calls off the remaining two digit number, the spectator is to open the book to that page and concentrate on its contents.
The performer now hands the book to the spectator and asks that the spectator go across the room, or stage, so that he can't peek or somehow see what the spectator is looking at during the test. Then the performer opens up the remaining slip for the first time and reads off the two digit number that the spectator had written, with the request that the spectator now turn to that page number and concentrate on its contents. In just a brief moment, the performer starts describing the appearance of the page, pictures or all print, and the other types of standard information used in book tests!
Method: The three slips of paper are set up for the Center-Tear technique. The only real directions at this point are to make sure that all of the numbers do get printed in the center sections of all three slips. Also the slips are to be as similar in appearance as is possible for reasons to be clear in just a bit.
The spectator is then asked which slip is to be used, and which two are to be destroyed. There are two people, and two slips to be destroyed, so it's logical for the spectator to tear up one of them, as you tear up the other one. In reality, of course, you actually perform the Center-Tear, which will give you one of the three numbers that the spectator chose.
You now ask for a book, or magazine, depending on the type of test you prefer to perform. While explaining what you want done, open the book to the number that you read, pretending that you had really just had picked a page at random, but really memorizing as much as you can.
The book is then handed to the spectator with the request that he move a distance away from you. This again will seem logical to the spectator, namely to keep you from somehow seeing what it is that he is looking at. Its real purpose, however, is to allow you to open the remaining slip, miscall the number on it, substituting the number you got via the Center-Tear, and then "show" it to the spectator who is now too far away to actually see the number that's really on it. It also allows you to then tear up this last slip, destroying all evidence against you. Touches like having trouble reading the number etc. will also help the psychology of this technique.
From here on, just reveal your information in your best dramatic manner.
