Introduction

"Constructive Mentalism"? What's THAT all about?

When I set out to put together this little collection of material from my repertoire, I didn't have any theme or given direction, just a collection of stuff. It was {and is) a collection of practical professional materia! that 1 use al! the time.

When I sat back and looked at it as a whole, I realised that in practically every piece contained here, there is some collecting and construction to do in order to perform the effect or routine. Hence the name, (actually, the play on words), "Constructive Mentalism". It's no one's fault but my own. I'll also take the blame for the cover art. It was late at night and I was feeling a bit loopy. Frankly it makes me chuckle every time I look at it. Forgive me, I know not what I do sometimes.

While I'm thinking about it, I'd better state here that all commercial production rights for the material contained in this book are strictly reserved. Please feel free to make these up for your own personal use.

I have some people to thank. As always, my thanks go out to those who have inspired and encouraged me over the years, Brian and Jan Flora, Docc Hilford, Tony Corinda, Theo Annemann and many, many others. My thanks as well to those who have been of incredible assistance through life's journey, and this book as well, whether they realised it or not. Pat and Kathy Holcombe, your friendship and kindness means more to me than you will ever know.

I must thank those who have contributed both directly and indirectly to the completion of this volume. Robert Waller, my dear friend. You are a constant inspiration to me. You watch, someday we'll actually work together. Larry Becker, the Godfather. Where would mentalism be without you? It's a privilege to call you my friend. Lee Earle, you were the single biggest reason I got into the mentalism game for real. I can never thank you enough. The Six and One-Half. It's a genuine honor to be associated with you. You keep me going. Dr. Charles Pecor, I can't tell you how glad I am that we have become friends (and 1 appreciate the reference, too).

Of course, my biggest thanks go to my partner for life, my wonderful wife, April Canter. April, how in the world did you ever get caught up in this insanity that is my life? You're so lucky. What am I saying?? I'M so lucky. I love you and I thank you for putting up with me.

I hope you enjoy "Constructive Mentalism". There's some really good stuff here. At least, it works for me.

So you know, a few of these items have appeared previously in other locations. 'Happy Meal Miracle' appears on my video, "Strivings Speaks Again", published by Flora and Company (1997). 'Confabulous Vacation' and '37 Revisited' appear on the "Desert Brainstorm Series" videotapes by the Six and One-Half, published by A-l Multimedia (1997). If you want to see them done live, that's a good source. Besides, where else can you see Becker doing his Brando impersonation?

Enjoy "Constructive Mentalism"!
