the chimney. A fake about to be described. In some ways it is akin to the time-honoured piston beloved by some of our forefathers. It is attached to a tray. In describing it I think that the reader will follow more closely by studying the drawing. The first drawing shows an elevation view of this piston. A is a piece of high-tensile strength wire (piano wire comes into this class). At the point where it protrudes from the flange it is tapered off to a needle point. This piece of wire is now given a coat of dull black paint. The lower end is sunk into a piece of steel or lead. B, the casing, is part of a f inch tubular curtain rod. It measures seven inches in length. The lower end of this tube is, of course, closed by sweating on a piece of metal. C is a small ring attached to the weight and through this is run a piece of fishing line. D is a flange and has a central hole drilled that will allow the wire to move easily. The underside of the flange has a small piece of tube attached through which another hole is drilled, allowing the fishing line to emerge (see enlarged illustration). The flange which is made to fit tightly into the tube is now fitted to the underside of the tray and as seen in the illustration the wire point should now protrude about one-eighth of an inch. Notice in the illustration that the fixing of the flange is at one side of the tray. The reason for this will soon be clear. A slit measuring \ inch by eight inches is now cut near the front of the conjurer's table, allowing the tube to go through and the tray to rest naturally on the table top (see illustration). Whilst, no doubt, many would have a drape to conceal the presence of the tube, my own method of concealment is illustrated. I had two silks between the tray and the table top ; they hung down in front concealing the tube. After performing this effect and wishing to use the silks, I picked up the tray at the side farthest from the audience with the right hand, bringing it into a vertical position (see illustration). The left hand took the silks and the continued on page 7 6
