£a the Menuvuf of a Magical Matte*

TO DAVID DEVANT

" Ah, did you once see Shelley plain,

And did he stop and speak to you !"

Robert Browning.

While memory persists, let me recall The thrill I felt when first I saw you plain; The year, " Nought Five," the place, St.

George's Hall, And you—the soul of Magic, and its brain.

What grace was there, what mastery, what ease,

And we, bewitched by that compelling spell, Were then and henceforth ardent devotees, Destined to love you long, and love you well.

What magic is it that through all the years, Triumphal years, the years of bitter pain, The years of laughter, fraught, alas ! with tears,

Has in our memories kept your image plain ?

Though silent now, your lesson will endure, To guide our aims, and keep the magic flame Which you enkindled burning just as pure, And strong, and bright as your undying fame.

The fine simplicity of Mr. Donovan's words expresses only too well the thoughts of those magicians who were fortunate enough to have seen the greatest English magician of all time. The first time we witnessed Devant's performance was in 1913, and whilst we were too young to appreciate the technique of his performance we were old enough to retain a memory of that performance. We little thought (for we were only nine years old at that time)- that some eight years later we should meet and talk to him. On the occasion mentioned the effects which remain as clear today as though we had witnessed them yesterday were the " Golliwog " Ball, the " Boy,

Girl and Eggs," the " Watch and Rabbit," the remarkable presentation of a vanishing " ghcst " and the " Artist's Dream." Regarding the last, it is interesting to note that the Master considered it his finest stage effect. On the stage David Devant had a manner different from any other performer we have seen . . a way of handling, a quiet smile and above all that touch cf humanity free from either superiority or sophistication. He looked and behaved like a gentleman. In compiling this very small tribute we have taken three effects which David Devant saw and liked.
