TAN HOCK CHUAN is a name that is synonymous with Magic in Mafaya. He is a magician of international repute, being the first Asian to win the Sphinx Award which he gained in 1937. This was followed by three honourable mentions. He has contributed widely to American and English magical periodicals since 1935, and he is known the world over as a writer and inventor of Magic.
Tan Hock Chuan is an outstanding performer, being much sought after in Singapore. He was given the great honour of appearing before H.R.H. the Duchess of Kent, when she visited Singapore with her son, H.R.H. the Duke of Kent. He was a so the first magician to perform in the first Singapore City Day of Celebrations, where he had an audience of over ten thousand! He has performed before the highest in the country. He has also performed for the humblest, a small group of waifs and orphans at a Christmas Party in a disused warehouse which was organised by a charitable organisation.
Tan Hock Chuan was recently made an Honorary Member of the Australian Society of Magicians. He is also a member of the Malayan Magic Circle, the International Brotherhood of Magicians, and the Magic Circle, London. Before the war he had the honour and pleasure of meeting some great magicians, among whom were Carter, Nicola, Malini and Chang. After World War II, he has had the privilege of meeting more magicians—men like john Booth, Ken de Courcy, Sorcar, Virgil and Joe Stuthard.
By profession, Tan Hock Chuan is a schoolmaster, and he teaches in Bartley Secondary School, where he specialises in Mathematics. His interest in magic began when he was barely nine years of age, and he gave his first public performance at the age of thirteen. This was in a school concert, and from then on he has not stopped performing.
He has been requested by many friends to collect together his many magical contributions in a book form, and he intends to do this in a more substantial form than the original booklet entitled "Rough and Smooth Possibilities", which he issued in 1948.
