Although the basic idea is simple, the apparatus must be extremely well made.

I. The Cups. These have no rims, and when the five are nested together they look like a single cup. (Figure 4).

They must fit VERY TIGHTLY one within the other. In four of the cups (A, C. D. and E in Figure 1) Burtini had an ingenious arrangement of springs to insure that they would not come apart prematurely.

II. The Centre Cup. The centre cup (B in Figure 1) was fitted with a contraption (probably springs of some kind) to grasp the ball securely.

III. The Ball. In reality, two are needed. The first one shown to the spectators is unprepared. The other identical in appearance, is attached to a pull. Both are in the right vest pocket.
