Memorized Deck Tricks In Jinx

In his A Real Psychic Card Test, described in The Jinx, No. 3, Dec. 1934, p. 11, a spectator selects a card and draws it on a slate, while the magician, mentally following the drawing, makes an identical one on another slate. Also see his One in Fourteen, which originally appeared in the March 1927 issue of The Linking Ring, Vol. VI, No. 1, p. 41, and later in his Book Without a Nome (1931), p. 13. This is a card divination accomplished with a cyclic stack, and can be adapted to a memorized deck. Both of these Annemann tricks also appear in Encyclopedia of Card Tricks (1939) edited by Hugard, pp. 232 and 204 respectively. Memorized Magazine Demonstration

There are several books and monographs which teach basic memory techniques such as a phonetic alphabet and memory pegs which must be mastered to do this stunt. One of the best I know of is The Art and Artifice of Memory by William Scott (1997, H& R Books). The chapter on the memorizing a magazine by William Tadlock is an excellent source.

The Memorized Stack

If one will look over the listed Memorized Stack he will find no particular order as there really isn't any. It really is a stack that has to be memorized, but it has one advantage over any in that it is made openly from a new, unopened deck of cards. Assuming you have a pack that pens to run in the same order as that I described, here are the series of actions used to get that pack into the Memorized Stack Order. THE MEMORIZED STACK 9. If the order you started with was the same as we mentioned and the shuffles were correctly followed, your pack will be in the same order as that in the Memorized Stack. 10. The packs that you may be con-standy using might, of course, have a different set-up. This means that if you go thru the various shuffles out-lined, you will get a different run of cards. The Memorized Deck

The memorized deck is a powerful weapon in any card man's hands, as many of you well know. The first set-up that I am going to explain is the one that I used back in the late sixties and early seventies. These were my Magic Castle years. I have always been fond of two particular tricks The Mental-Selection Speller on p. 120 of The Amateur Magician's Handbook, and the Dai Vernon Poker Deal in issue 311 of The New Phoenix, also reprinted in Earlv Vernon and The Dai Vernon Book of Magic. I thought so much of these two effects that I decided to make a memorized deck which included both effects. I am not going to explain the Speller and Poker Deal, as any card man, worth his salt, will have the above mentioned volumes in his library. Arrange the cards in the order given below. There is no semblance to any system. Memorize these cards in the given order for your memorized pack. Perform one or two effects that do not disturb the order of the cards. Variations

You could also use a Svengali Deck instead of the memorized deck. Do an honest dovetail shuffle, but manage it without splitting the long-short pairs. Let the indifferent faces of the cards be seen and put the deck into its case. Ask a spectator to put the cased deck into his pocket. Using the second deck, force the card that matches the one duplicated twenty-six times in the Svengali Deck. A spectator now calls a number from one to fifty-two. If he names an odd number, have the count made to that number in the cased deck. If he names an even number, have that many cards counted off and the next card turned up to reveal the match. Alternatively, have the count done from the bottom of the deck, he cards being drawn from there until the named number is reached.

Reland

In his excellent and well-known collection, Ireland Writes a Book (1931), we find a stack that vied for a time with Nikola's in popularity. He also provides some very good effects to be performed with it or with any other memorized stack, such as cutting to any card called for (with a good method for the glimpse), a rising-card effect, a behind-the-back location, spelling to any card called for, a forced cut, a cut estimation and fishing (through key questions), and a clever deck-switch carried out inside the magician's pocket, but allowing the spectator to confirm there is only one deck in it (done with an ungimmicked pocket). Ron Escott Magician

Note 458 mentions a good idea by Al Baker for using twenty-six stacked cards in a pocket as an index, with a message written on each card. I think this lends itself to wonderful effects, despite Daley's lack of detail. Louis Hi Kola

In The Nikola Card System, London (1927) this great English magician describes his mnemonic order, a classic and still serviceable memorization method and several tricks. Although a certain mnemonic deck, or a numbered rosary stack, had been popular since the nineteenth century (see Raynaly in the magazine L'lllusionislc, 1905, and Roter-berg and Hofzinser in this bibliography), the popularity of a stack that needs to be memorized is largely owed to Nikola. His monograph was republished as the last chapter in Hugard's Encyclopedia of Card Tricks (1937). The Sagacious Joker N3

Using any pack that has a Joker, have it shuffled by a spectator. Take it and in removing the Joker sight and memorize the second, third, and fourth cards from the bottom. Invite a spectator to cut about the middle, put the packets on the table and place his hands on top of them. Tell him to lift one hand. If he lifts the hand from the original bottom half of the pack you say, You want to use this packet Very well. Hand it to him and put the other aside. But if he raises the other hand simply remove that packet and let him retain the one under his hand. Give any plausible reason that occurs to you and have him count the cards face down. What The Audience Sees

The nice part about this effect is the fact that everything can now be examined. Nothing is gimmicked and the spectator genuinely shuffles the pack of playing cards. To top it off, the performer doesn't have to memorize anything except the procedure. The horoscope reading is contained in the letter the volunteer reads aloud. Be sure to give the letter to the volunteer as a souvenir at the conclusion of the effect.

Naming Cards in the Dark

At any favorable opportunity, for instance in the course of a trick in which you had to turn your back to the spectators with the pack in your hands, take off the top two or three cards, memorize them and slip them into a vest pocket. Before the lights are put out hold your hand near to the spectator who has the pack so that he can place a card on it without fumbling. When the lights are put out and he puts a card on your hand, at once slip into a pocket and take out the first of the cards memorized from your vest pocket. Place it face down on your hand and put your hand out in the same position as before.

Under cover of searching for the Joker you find and bring to the face of the pack an A, a 2, a 4, and an 8, each of a different suit. These may be in any order, but whatever it is it must be remembered. To avoid this memorizing you may use four set cards, say AC, 2H, 4S, and 8D, and get them to the bottom in that order. Discard the Joker and have a spectator cut a packet from the top and shuffle it. While he does this separate the four special cards at the bottom of the remainder of the pack, and hold the division at the loner end with the right thumb. The Card Miracle Certain

The trick can be done without resorting to sleight of hand. Suppose the spectator cuts, as happens most often, within a card or two of the center. When you take the pack back run through it with the faces towards yourself and find the key card. Cut the cards bringing the key card to the bottom, restoring the pack to the same order as when the spectator made his selection. Count to the twenty-third card from the bottom and shift them to the top. Glance at the indices of the next five cards, the original twenty-fourth, twenty-fifth, twenty-sixth, twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth cards, and memorize them, put one card out on the table face down, and the next two on the top, remembering the positions. To Prepare And Perform

To begin, the cards are handed to the participant to examine and shuffle. Then simply follow the procedure as detailed because it's totally automatic. All the performer has to do is to remember the ninth card from the bottom of the shuffled deck as he feigns memorizing the order the deck. The constant reference to the target card is important during the performance otherwise the audience could forget the identity of the target card. It's also important to build the suspense of the climax leading up to the revelation of the eleventh (or whatever number is used) card. Also, should four counts produce no match-ups and there are four face down cards in the row, the top card of the deck being held by the spectator will be the target card. The Development of Style

Apparently, things they just witnessed, without EXPERIENCING, just didn't become part of long term memory. I've heard purely visual experiences compared to bubble gum for the eyes. And while there's nothing wrong with that, I've grown to believe that, except in rare cases, the purely visual experiences don't go any deeper than the eyes. And personally, I wanted more than that I wanted to go past the eyes, working my way deep into their psyche. I wanted my magic to move them. Count out 21 cards and lay them face down on a flat surface. Ask a person to take one card and memorize it, then place it back on the table without showing you (of course.) Mix the cards and then deal them, face up, into seven rows of three cards each. Ask the person to look for his her card, and to tell you which COLUMN their card is in. Whichever column it is, gather up the cards, making sure that column goes in between the other two. Deal the cards, again 7 rows of 3, and ask again which COLUMN. Repeat this one more time. Be careful DON'T MIX THE CARDS BY ACCIDENT. After doing that, turn the cards face down, so the backs are towards you, and count off ten cards. THE ELEVENTH CARD IS THE PERSON'S. (Hint In these three times the person's card should appear twice in the same column and once in a different one.)

The Cincinnatti Option

When the participant hands you the empty clipboard and returns to his seat, take a moment to write (using the non-ink end of the pen) a brief description of that person, such as bald, green shirt or necklace w blue stones and so forth. When you read and memorize each question, associate it with the writer's appearance so you can pick that person out of the audience.

Guide To Card Positions

This explanation will be a guide for you in the learning of card sleights and principles. It will make my teaching of them perfectly clear to you. You should memorize these descriptive terms and definitions thoroughly so that when one is mentioned you know instantly what is meant.

Obviously if you can memorize the crib list that you need for any given effect, there's As we have already noted earlier in this missive, this isn't always practical or even needed. But please be clear on this point, in no way should the ability to use a crib be used as an excuse NOT to memorize a list for any effect that you plan on using with any frequency at ail. Allow me a brief anecdote to explain my reasoning. We were discussing the techniques involved in memorizing a full concerto. Keep in mind that we're talking about the complete memorization of a single piece of music which coutd run as long as 45 minutes in length. The Future Through Listening

The point in all of these examples is NOT to memorize such words or lines. They are extremely basic and simple examples of how you might apply the use of details to create readings. Just keep in mind one simple basic rule Details Equal Reality. The more supposed details and specifics you can add in, the more realistic your reading will appear to be. More specifics, more details, the more likely the spectator will feel the reader is trying to be legitimate at least. Only phonies don't give you specifics. Fakes are just general. How many times have you heard such comments from the public Now take advantage of these beliefs. Turn it around to your advantage. Overwhelm them with specifics and details, numbers and facts. This way even the most skeptical people will believe you are at worst, really trying.

The Ramo Samee Card Trick

Magician's Tricks and How They Are Done. by the late Henry Hatton and Adrian Plate, is a feat they describe as one of the most incomprehensible tricks ever invented. While the Hatton and Plate trick is excellent, it depends upon the use of a deck of but 32 cards. and that I do not care for. Further, it depends upon the performer's memorizing several tables. As my method uses the entire deck and does away with tables. it is actually new. The feat is a favorite with several of my magician friends and I call it by the name they have given it--The Ramo Samee Card Trick. Ramo Samee, an East Indian magician. was the first recorded performer of his nationality to appear in America. There is nothing East Indian about the trick-but then you know how it is with a name for a trick.

Effect The magician takes a packet of ten cards from the top of a shuffled deck. A spectator thinks of one of those cards and memorizes it. The magician tells the spectator to also memorize the position of the card from the top of the (face-down) packet. That done, the magician squares the packet up.

Take an ordinary deck of cards and memorize the bottom card. Before you start the trick turn the bottom card upside down and place it back on the bottom of the deck. Give the top half of the deck to a spectator and keep the bottom half for yourself. Tell them you will remove one card from the deck you are holding and do so. Look at the card but do not memorize it, the card you need to remember the bottom one. Place it on the table in front of you. Tell them to remove one card from their deck but do not let you see. When they do this put the hand with the deck in down to your side and when no one looking just let flip the deck over. When the spectator has removed one card and looked at it. Tell him to place it on the table face down next to yours. Now tell him to put your card face down in his deck without looking, that way it is lost and no one knows what it was. Martins Twelve Card Trick

Presentation The performer holds a number of cards in his left hand, which are counted and proven to be exactly twelve. He asks the indulgence of the audience while he proceeds to cause these cards to disappear one or two at a time until each card in succession has mystically vanished from the hand. The cards are reproduced from the right trouser pocket. At all times the cards are in full view of the spectators, and, properly presented, their evanishment is as bewitching an effect as there is to be found in the realm of conjuring. Their subsequent reproduction from the trouser pocket heightens the mystery of the effect considerably, as the cards may be noted and memorized by the spectators if the performer chooses. Several new moves together with a number of invaluable and sure-fire methods of misdirection serve to render this presentation easy to master and, at the some time, positively baffling at all points of the procedure.

Beliefs and Belief Systems

Neurologically, beliefs are associated with the limbic system and hypothalamus in the midbrain. The limbic system has been linked to both emotion and long term memory. While the limbic system is a more primitive structure than the cortex of the brain in many ways, it serves to integrate information from the cortex and to regulate the autonomic nervous system (which controls basic body functions such as heart rate, body temperature, pupil dilation, etc.). Because they are produced by deeper structures of the brain, beliefs produce changes in the fundamental physiological functions in the body and are responsible for many of our unconscious responses. You just memorize what's on each line of each page of seven or eight books and pass those books out in the audience. We'd, i don'(know if even Dun> linger could memorize every page of seven or eight books. In fact, in my case, my children tell their friends that their dad has a photographic memory bui it's per mancntlv out of film. Uses of the Peg and Link Systems

You can start applying what you've learned immediately, if you want to. Not particularly for remembering debts, which I'm sure you'd rather forget, but perhaps for memorizing the errands that you have to do for each day. If you usually write out your shopping list, why not try to memorize it with the help of the Link system. Simply link the first item to the second item, the second to the third, and so on, down the list. You can memorize an entirely different list the next time you go shopping without fear of confusion. The beautiful thing about the Link method is that you can forget a list whenever you wish. Actually, when you memorize the second shopping list, the first one fades away. You can, of course, retain as many lists or links as you desire. The mind is a most fantastic machine it can be compared to a filing cabinet. Method and Handling

The deck must be in a memorized stack order. (Any memorized stack will do as long as you can instantly determine the position in the deck of any card named.) You must use whichever cards are the top and bottom cards of your stack as the two sandwich cards (i.e., the two cards that you will use to trap the named card between.) In my stack these cards are the two red aces, so 1 simply start the effect by openly removing the red aces from the deck. To give the impression that the aces are lost randomly in the deck, I first give the deck a casual cut to centralize the aces. I then spread through the cards, remove one red ace, and square the deck. I then spread again and remove die second ace, this time cutting the deck at the point from which I remove the ace to bring the stack back to its correct order. You must next obtain a left fourth-finger break under card number twenty in your memorized stack. This is facilitated by the fact that you know the identity of the card. I simply injog...

Card Location Supreme

You can repeat by having the spectator name any number between ten and fifty-two then deal that number of cards face down and note the top card of the pile when the number is reached. In this case mentally subtract five from the number chosen and when that card is dealt memorize its position and the five cards following it. The rest of the pack is dropped on top, the pack squared and cut. In this case as the sequence is reversed, you must either turn your back to find it, or deal the cards with them face up in your left hand, turning them face down as you put them on the table.

Trick Description You shuffle the deck several times and then ask a person to tell you when to STOP when they think you drop ten cards. You then count the correct amount of cards actually dropped. You then tell them to memorize the top card and put it back into the deck shuffling anyway they want to. You then fan all the cards out in a spiral towards the middle and pick their card out for them. 1. Shuffle the card deck a lot, memorizing the bottom card. Depending on the war you shuffle, you should be able to keep a certain card always on the bottom. I usually lead with the right hand first so that is always the bottom card no matter how many times you shuffle. If you lose the card, keep shuffling until you memorize the bottom card.

Construction Management and Script

Ribbon spread the deck face up from left to right on the table as you explain, 7 will now attempt to memorize the order of the cards. And in less than fifteen seconds Someone with a stop watch or a watch with a second hand is appointed time keeper. This spectator calls out Ready, set, go for you to start your study of the spread. Now you must act as though you really are memorizing the order of the cards. Stare at them and move your lips, mumbling the names of some of the cards. Also touch a few of them with the tip of your right forefinger, moving from left to right, to reinforce the impression that you are noting their order. In fact, you are looking for your key card and noting the card to its left, which is the spectator's card. It seems the human mind just isn't capable of remembering complex details vividly over time. If we ever hope to make it to long-term memory, we have to be as simple as a slogan. Say it in a sentence, and you stand a great chance of being remembered. The coin in the bottle. The pencil through the coin. The card on the ceiling. The floating bill. The bill in lemon. Make it easy, give them a handle. A memory class I took once explained that memories can be recalled more easily if they are effects, catch phrases into your performance, and select slogan simple effects. Taking advantage of legitimate memory techniques might skew the odds ever so slightly in our favor.

Lay the deck face down in your left hand. Put your right thumb under the deck and your right fingers on top (lengthwise to the deck). Start sliding the cards back from the top, 1 to 5 at a time, about 1 centimeter each. As you do so, secretly slide the bottom card toward you with your right thumb. To remember its sequence of values, memorize the rhyme Eight Kings Threatened To Save Ninety-Five Queens For One Sick Knave. Neither specific hotel name, reminds the performer, nor room number are printed on the card another frustration for a would-be pickpocket. Show the spectator the left hand page (as he sees it) and ask that he open his book to the same page number as is showing at the bottom of the freely selected page. This routine is based on Bob Gassidy's Memorized Deck Routine from his The Art oj Mentalism II. Rob is one of mental ism's lincst performers, and anyone who is serious about mentalism should study evrything he has I made three modifications to these cards to make them .suitable for a memory demonstration similar to Bob's Memorized Deck Routine. You then give the spectator the cards and have him (or her) give you a card and then put one on the bottom until he gets to the last card. That last card is the card he mentally chose. The CD-ROM that is included contains a Windows program. (This means that MentCode is only useful for PC users.) The main function of the program is to allow you to practice the code. You can practice the basic code (those words that cue the numbers 1-100), or you can practice the coding receiving of actual objects. You can practice as the sender or the receiver. The program is completely customizable, so if you change code words or their associated objects you can simply enter that data into the program. The program was simple to install and easy to understand. (And for those of you entering the world of memorized deck, I see no reason why you couldn't use this program to speed up the process of learning a stack.)

Hello I Must be Going

I have a lot of experience with this type of effect, so let me offer you some thoughts before you fire off your 30. The method I use involves a memorized deck, a diary prepared using suggestions from Simon Aronson and Eric Mason (this information has been published), and a force of my own devising. The routine gets an unbelievable response from laymen for two reasons the diary can withstand fairly rigorous examination, and I can sell the force. One problem with Astro Diary is that, because of the repeated bank of ten cards, the diary can only be cursorily examined. If the spectator checks the 1st of each month, he will see the same card. (Using Simon's preparation, there is no such correlation, and I can use this fact to sell the randomness of the diary.) Most magicians are not willing to pay the price and master a memorized deck. If you are one of them, Astro Deck may be a suitable compromise, although the end result pales against what is possible with this type of effect.

The Breakthrough Card System

The first copies of the Breakthrough Card System were published 23 years ago in 1983. Over the years, there have been reprints of the original, the 25th Anniversary edition, The Memorized Breakthrough Card System, articles in magazines, as well as the performances and explanations on this video. The system itself is thoroughly explained on the DVD with all the shortcuts and other handling tips. It is the intention of this series of guide books to present new ideas and not repeat what has already been presented elsewhere. You must actually take the coin in the right hand, and then place it in the left. As you repeat the actions, notice how the left is relaxed the moment before it is to receive the coin. The left hand will snap shut when it receives the coin and the right fingers won't open wide when the coin is dropped. They'll separate just enough to allow the coin to fall. Note that when the coin actually falls, the hands are about one inch apart. Don't forget to memorize the speed of the hands when they are in motion, especially when the right hand drops after the apparent transfer.

Many of the newer memorized deck systems are lauded because they contain built-in effects such as Poker demonstrations, spelling effects, etc. Although I have great respect for these stacks, I have already stated my viewpoint concerning what I believe is necessary and what is not. With that said, I am reluctantly offering this routine with the Breakthrough Card System. I say, reluctantly, because I do not want the merits of the system to be based on the following routine or anything similar.
