Sum Solus

As a dessert he would swallow the knives His last appearance in Paris was most remarkable. The dinner began with a soup of asps in simmering oil. On each side was a dish of vegetables, one containing thistles and burdocks, and the other fuming acid. Other side dishes, of turtles, rats, bats and moles, were garnished with live coals. For the fish course he ate a dish of snakes in boiling tar and pitch. His roast was a screech owl in a sauce of glowing brimstone. The salad proved to be spider webs full of small explosive squibs, a plate of butterfly wings and manna worms, a dish of toads surrounded with flies, crickets, grasshoppers, church beetles, spiders, and caterpillars. He washed all this down with flaming brandy, and for dessert ate the four large candles standing on the table, both of the hanging side lamps with their contents, and finally the large center lamp, oil, wick and all. This leaving the room in darkness, Dufour's face shone out in a mask of living flames.

Do It and Fail

The trick which we now give you is one that has challenged the wits of many thousands of persons. It is especially suitable for use after dessert, when the company is relaxed, the talk is general, and everyone is in a congenial mood. It is not a trick for a set performance.

Setlirig the Stage

We have all had our moments as magicians that make us proud, usually having something to do with an astonishing coincidence working in our favour. Recently I was having dinner with a family who knew my trade, and the eldest son, aged about nine, was eager for me to show him a trick. In such situations I generally allow my behaviour to suggest that they would be extremely lucky to see any magic from me. Not that 1 say those words out loud. I would never have dinner with anybody if I voiced such sentiments. But I allow my manner to suggest it. I feign a certain, but not a decisive, reluctance. I strung this kid along as much as I could, in the back of my mind wondering what I would show, if indeed anything. I had, of course, as fate decreed, forgotten the sponge ding-dong, Eventually I decided I would wait until dessert and then read his precocious prepubescent mind. He was impressed by the playing cards I had with me, so I decided to use them. Here is what happened. By the time dessert...

Fuck Bin Ladin

So I head to my gate with the most expensive Big Mac on the planet and start scarfing my food down. I strike up a conversation with a guy next to me as I do so. He's wearing full army dessert fatigues, so I ask him where he's headed. He says he's on his way to Iraq. It turns out this dude has been on 2 weeks leave and was in the war from the beginning. He was there when the troops invaded from Kuait, he was there when they took Bagdad, and he was there when they fought ambushes at Tekrit. Suddenly, this guy who can't be a year or two older than me is telling me more war stories than my grandfather, and I can't help but be in awe and scared at the same time.

Using Ambiguity

- This includes the way I look at them and eye contact, the way I touch them, and even doing little things that assume sexual rapport as I mentioned before like Feeding them , sharing their drink glass at dinner, sharing dessert, touching their face neck lips -if even to brush off some lint . See the section on Sexual Rapport.

Art Artifice

Dover Publications has reprinted five of Martin's early works (Match-ic, 12 Tricks with a Borrowed Deck, After the Dessert, Cut the Cards, and Over the Coffee Cups) in one volume titled Martin Gardner's Table Magic. Of the five books mentioned in parenthesis in the previous sentence, only Cut the Cards appeared in the large Martin Gardner Presents compilation published by Kaufman and Greenberg. Consequently, the majority of this material will be completely unknown to most magicians, and at a price tag of 5.95 this is the bargain of the month.

O Drnormansell

As in all restaurant performances, dinner itself will always take precedence over the performer. The best time to perform is at coffee time, after dessert. However, since you have a presence in the restaurant you may be asked to perform at any time. The secret is to have routines that can be either lengthened or shortened at will. Try to make your routines segmented so that each segment offers a suitable climax that can be expanded upon. A good plan is to introduce yourself and then follow by doing one short effect, bearing in mind that anything could happen at any time throughout your routine. Be prepared to move on, leaving the spectators with the
