I was going to write a rather caustic introduction to this month's reviews, because I have been feeling rather cynical lately. Several of my friends are embroiled in disputes in which their intellectual property has been appropriated unfairly, and I was thinking of writing about that. But I'm not going to. The way to avoid these disputes, of course, is to only appropriate the ideas of dead people, who have no one to champion their cause. You can then package these ideas and make a quick buck by selling the information to the general public. I was going to write about this. But I'm not going to.
The reason I'm not going to dwell on the negative is that a most amazing thing happened to me at a small convention near Kansas City a few weeks ago. I had just arrived at the convention hotel and was at the front desk trying to get my room changed, when a young man came up to me and gave me some money.
"What's this for?" I asked.
"It's for one of your books. A friend gave me a Xeroxed copy, and I wanted to pay you for it."
You could have knocked me over with a feather. Just about the time you've written off the entire human race, someone comes up and reminds you that there are still people in the world who do the right thing. And if that one person can influence one other person, then maybe there's some hope.
So, here's to all of you good people out there. There are more of you than we realize, because you don't get the press you deserve. Stay well, stay healthy, and have a safe and joyous holiday season.
